Calvin Vlaanderen notched up his first overall podium finish of the season this past weekend at the MXGP of Finland, and this has come at a pivotal time. Amidst silly season chaos, Vlaanderen is among many that are yet to ink a deal for 2026.
“I’m stoked” he affirmed. “It’s been a long time coming. Obviously, this is a goal from the beginning of the season to be on the box you know, so, it’s been a tough season so far. What is it, Round 13? And this is my first one (podium), that’s not ideal but we take it. The level is really high and I was in a position that second moto for the podium and I was like you know this doesn’t come around often so let me just lock in and really focus on the last 15-minutes! Anyway, I’m really happy with it.”
Although it is frustrating to wait thirteen rounds to earn podium honours, the timing of Vlaanderen’s podium in Finland could potentially play into his favour, apposed to hurting his chances of landing a ride for 2026.
“It definitely makes a difference” he said, when asked about the timing of his podium. “In a good way, I mean of course you would like a podium more times this year, but if I look at it like three, four weeks ago, it is still a good time for it, any time now. These months are so critical to have good results, obviously for next year I don’t have a contract so this is good timing for a podium.”

Despite being frustrated with his season so far, the #10 has steadily risen to 5th in the championship standings after a rocky start to the season. Alongside the consistency he has recovered, Vlaanderen is a former Grand Prix winner, further illustrating his capabilities and the value he brings to a team. As the end of the season approaches, many riders in the paddock are awaiting for some of the heavy hitters to sign a contract for next year, to then see what options are left for them on the table.
“Nothing mate, nothing” he said, when asked about any potential options for next year. “It’s chaotic at the moment because, you know, obviously Tim (Gajser) is free of contract and Jeffrey (Herlings) also free of contract. As a rider like myself, I am realistic, I know what I’m worth, where I am, as these are the number one riders in the teams obviously, the manufactures are after, so I kind of have to wait for them to get their deal done first before I can find a spot.”
