An ACU British Motocross Championship MX2 title fight breakdown

After MX2 championship leader Tommy Searle suffered a nasty crash at the final round of the Arenacross World Tour — forcing him to miss this past weekend’s round of the British Championship, Dirt Store Triumph Racing teammate Billy Askew looked to be a strong favourite to take control of the red plate, entering Round 4 just 11 points off the summit. However, Askew failed to capitalise on the opportunity, scoring just 10 championship points therefore leaving his veteran teammate still in control of the red plate.

MX2 reigning world champion Kay de Wolf made an appearance at Preston Docks, sweeping both motos ahead of Dixon Racing fill-in rider Kay Karssemakers. The Dutch duo’s strong finishes played well into the hands of the likes of Charlie Heyman, Ben Mustoe, and Gyan Doensen, as all three are now within touching distance of the championship lead, with plenty of rounds still to come.

Charlie Heyman put together an impressive weekend at Preston Docks, finishing third overall and significantly cutting the points deficit — leaving just a 6-point gap heading into the final stretch of the season. The SC Sporthomes Husqvarna rider is finding his form at the perfect time, with his early-season consistency now being rewarded alongside his newfound speed. Heyman is no stranger to racing against the best, competing in a handful of AMA Nationals and recently performing well at the MXGP of Matterley Basin in the EMX250 class.

ASA United GasGas rider Ben Mustoe is yet to finish inside the top three in a moto this season, but his top-five consistency has put him in a strong position in the championship — just 6 points off the lead. Unlike many of his competitors, Mustoe has primarily raced within the UK and has been balancing school life alongside professional racing. Now that his education is complete, his full focus shifts to the remaining rounds of 2025 — perfectly aligning with his bid for the MX2 title.

Last but not least is the highly touted Dutchman, Gyan Doensen. In contrast to his rivals, Doensen’s Achilles’ heel this season has been his consistency. While he’s stood on the podium in three motos, he’s struggled to replicate that form in the following races, making his title hopes appear all but over prior to Preston Docks. However, the Gabriel SS24 rider now sits 21 points behind Searle — with a wealth of experience and success on the EMX scene — including a World Championship on an 85cc machine, Doensen will look to draw on that pedigree in the final rounds, aiming to deliver back-to-back British titles for the team.
