What an MXoN debut for young French talent Mathis Valin! The pressure of representing your country is unlike any other, especially for young riders like Valin. However, he didn’t fold at all throughout the weekend, posting solid results to finish third in the MX2 overall standings and helping Team France secure third overall in the Nations classification. Alongside the nerves, the American racetrack was another challenge that the 19-year-old successfully conquered, wrapping up his debut professional season with some well-earned podium pie.
Despite this being his first MXoN appearance, he was partnered alongside recently crowned World Champion Romain Febvre and former MXoN winner Maxime Renaux. Add to that team manager Gautier Paulin, and Valin was surrounded by one of the most experienced groups of French talent in recent years. This, however, can go one of two ways – either thrive under the spotlight or let the added pressure take its toll.
The impressive performance also earned Valin the Ricky Carmichael Award, presented to the best young rider of the event. We caught up with Mathis at Ironman to discuss his weekend, American tracks, his teammates, and much more!
