Exclusive: Rubén Fernández on the 2027 Prototype CRF450 and the 2026 Season

Honda HRC’s Rubén Fernández is gearing up for his fifth MXGP campaign, having finished 5th (2023) and 4th (2025) in the overall classification. An ACL injury in 2024 prevented consistent momentum in the standings, but nonetheless the Spaniard has notched nine podiums in the premier class alongside a Grand Prix victory at the 2023 Argentine GP.

Whilst fans may view last season as a success for Fernández, he was open and honest about the struggles he faced and admitted he wasn’t particularly enjoying his racing at times. A switch to the 2027 prototype CRF450 at the Czech Grand Prix didn’t make life any easier. Despite securing second place in the opening race at Loket, Fernández provided interesting insights into the challenges of getting the bike “race ready” for world level competition.

Limited test days between race weekends certainly didn’t help his case; however, with a full off-season under his belt, the Spaniard is confident and happy, not only with the improvements made to the machine, but also mentally and physically with where he is now.

Overall, I believe, and I think many loyal MXGP fans would agree, that Rubén flies under the radar when bench racing the heavy hitters in the premier class. The changes within Honda HRC have certainly helped his cause and brought more attention his way, but if anything, that quieter spotlight could work in his favour. After Tim Gajser’s injury at the Swiss GP, Fernández became the sole rider for HRC in the premier class, which of course added pressure on multiple fronts. Now, with an influx of high profile teammates around him, some of that pressure shifts away from the Spaniard, potentially giving him the freedom to just focus on delivering on track.
