Last night the 2025 season of the FIM World Supercross Championship kicked off in dramatic fashion at the Oscar & Juan Gálvez Racetrack in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The opening round delivered dominant performances, surprise comebacks and provided strong early indicators for the title chase ahead.

Big Picture:

The championship’s two main classes, SX1 (450 cc) and SX2 (250 cc), both saw stand-out winners who looked very comfortable from the gate drop. In SX1, Ken Roczen commandeered the field to take the overall win, while in the SX2 class the British rider Max Anstie was seemingly untouchable.

The venue set the tone: a high-stakes opener, international venue, high expectations. With three motos per class (two shorter sprints + one longer main), consistency and speed were the keys.

Overall Podium SX1

Ken Roczen (GER) – Pipes Motorsport Group Suzuki – 45 points

Justin Cooper (USA) – Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing – 37 points

Haiden Deegan (USA) – Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing – 32 points

Roczen was flawless: he won the Superpole, sprint races and the main. He set the early benchmark for the title.  Cooper made a strong showing as runner-up—solid start. Deegan, in his debut full 450 run, impressed by grinding through from less-ideal gate picks to grab a podium.  Notably, regular names like Jason Anderson and Christian Craig were in the mix but couldn’t match Roczen’s pace. The formatting of two short sprints (8 laps) plus a 12-lap main rewarded both speed and stamina.

Overall Podium SX2

Max Anstie (GBR) – Team GSM Yamaha – 45 points

Shane McElrath (USA) – Quad Lock Honda Racing – 37 points

Coty Schock (USA) – Arby’s Rick Ware Racing Yamaha – 34 points

Anstie was dominant: he swept all three motos (including Superpole etc) and looked thoroughly in control.  McElrath held on for 2nd—strong effort under pressure. Schock grabbed the final step of the podium, showing the U.S. riders in SX2 are still very competitive. The class showcased emerging talent and a potential new threat to previously dominant machines.

Round 1 delivered exactly what fans hope for: exciting racing, strong performances, and storylines to follow. Ken Roczen reminded everyone of his status in SX1. Max Anstie announced himself as a force in SX2.

If this is any indication, the 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship is shaping up to be a thrilling series.
