KTM, Yamaha, Suzuki | What Next for Chase Sexton?

It has gone from bad to worse for Monster Energy Kawasaki since the beginning of the 2025 SMX campaign, right through to now, 24th October 2026. The green powerhouse have now lost another superstar of the sport just one year into a three year, multi million dollar deal. First Jorge Prado, now Chase Sexton.

Despite winning two 450SX main events (Anaheim 2 and Salt Lake City), it was far from a secret that the Sexton camp and Kawasaki were struggling to find a comfortable setup for the 27 year old Illinois native.

2027 Options:

KTM Return:

Despite their difficult ending just a year ago, KTM could still be an option for Sexton heading into 2027, with reports suggesting the two parties have already held talks. Having watched Jorge Prado find success aboard the KTM after making the switch from Kawasaki, Sexton could see a move back to familiar machinery as a low risk option. With Eli Tomac retiring and Lucas Coenen potentially staying in the 250 class for Supercross, KTM could be looking to add another title contender to their 450SX line up, with Michael Lindsay suggesting the door has not been closed on a return for Sexton. The pairing would make sense on paper, with Sexton already familiar with the bike and KTM having the budget to add another big name alongside Prado, before potentially bringing Coenen into the outdoor effort.

Yamaha:

Yamaha could also be in the mix, although the question remains where Sexton would fit into their plans. According to Matthes, Bobby Regan could be more involved in the discussions than the factory Yamaha operation itself, with Haiden Deegan expected to be a major part of the 450 effort and Cole Davies potentially moving up next season. Sexton would bring plenty of experience and championship-winning potential, but would he have the role he wants within the team? His previous situation at Honda, where he felt overshadowed by the Lawrence brothers, could be a factor to consider. A move to a privateer team such as PRMX, with factory Yamaha support, could also be an option. The team recently posted on Instagram, thanking Kyle Chisholm for helping get the Yamaha 450 dialled in and teasing more news for Monday, although it remains to be seen whether that has any connection to Sexton.

Suzuki:

HEP Suzuki could be another team to watch as Sexton weighs up his options for 2027. Ken Roczen has yet to confirm his plans for next season, leaving some uncertainty around the team’s rider line up. However, with a new title sponsor bringing additional investment and Suzuki Japan reportedly becoming more involved, the team could have the resources to make a move for Sexton, even if Roczen remains. Suzuki would offer another opportunity for Sexton to join a factory supported programme and fight at the front, but much will depend on Roczen’s decision and how the team plans to shape its line up for next season.
