Jeffrey Herlings shared his sympathy for Lucas Coenen following the young Belgian’s injury, admitting he feels “gutted” to see the 19-year-old going through another difficult moment.

Speaking to us on the Cult Moto Post Race Podcast, Herlings was quick to put the racing to one side when talking about Coenen and the situation he now finds himself in.

“I feel gutted for the kid, he’s 19 years old…”

It’s easy to forget just how young Coenen still is. Despite already establishing himself as one of the fastest riders in the paddock and regularly battling with riders who have considerably more experience, he’s still only 19.

Herlings knows better than most just how quickly injuries can change things in motocross. The Dutchman has had more than his fair share of setbacks throughout his own career, which perhaps makes his comments towards Coenen hit a little harder.

For now, the most important thing is seeing Lucas recover and get himself back behind the gate when he’s ready. At 19, there should still be an awful lot more to come from him.
